Un-Useless Invention

Wits School of Arts; Johannesburg, ZA, 2009

Design, Public art

This project was based on a workshop entitled ‘Un-Useless Invention’ by artists, Laura Nova (US) around creating design artworks for public performance and participation. This work consists of an invention and instruction based performance. The invention, or: Analogue Message Storage Device enables one to both write and archive information. This invention is attached to the body and situated on the back of an individual and runs down the spine. The physiological situation of the device to some degree facilitates a lack of immediate and direct contact with the carrier of the invention. This loss of direct contact provides the invention, as a tool, an entry point for investigation.
